General Transportation Recommendations

HOW TO MOVE A PIANO WITHOUT DAMAGING IT.

send piano in a removal

When moving a piano, it must be ensured that it is not abruptly pushed, and it must be protected from blows as well. It is a much more complicated movement compared to a furniture move, because it has a series of precision mechanisms that have to be transported with special delicacy.

ALL THE TIPS ON PIANO MOVING.

Moving a piano requires a very significant effort. It is heavy (a vertical piano weighs from 190 kg to 270 kg. And a grand piano, approximately 200 - 600 kg) and it is very easy to damage its complex mechanics formed by pieces of wood and metal.
It is clear that first of all you have to measure the extreme dimensions of the instrument and make sure that it fits through all the doors of your new home or building. A vertical piano (or wall), whose soundboard and strings are vertically placed, measures approximately 1.5 meters wide and between 1.2 and 1.5 meters high). A grand piano (whose soundboard is in a horizontal position and the strings arranged in a straight line) can measure more than 2.5 metres.

We specialize in making safe door-to-door transfers, ensuring the integrity of all your objects, including the most sensitive ones. An example of this is music instruments, such as the piano (whose dimensions also play an important role in transportation).

Tips for transporting pianos, musical instruments in a move. Follow these recommendations to carry out a safe and effective transfer of a piano:

1. Prepare the instrument for transport. For this, it is necessary to remove the outer parts and pack everything properly. The outer parts of the piano are removed as follows:

- The lower cover, which protects the lower part of the platform and the pedal mechanism, is secured with a latch, so you can remove it without the use of a screwdriver;

- The upper cover is fixed and removed in the same way as the lower part;

- The percussion mechanism can be removed, but it is not desirable, as there is a great risk of damage during transportation process. If you are sure of its complete integrity, simply unscrew the fasteners;

- The cover, which protects the keys, is fixed with screws, so you will need a screwdriver;

- All removed items must be packaged with a soft cloth or bubble wrap. For greater reliability, secure the packaging with ropes or adhesive tape;

2. In order to reduce the risk of damage to the coating and corners of the piano, before moving the instrument, it must be protected to avoid any scratches and cracks, to prevent possible scratches and bumps that may be carried during transport. To do this use blankets and covers made of wool or cotton to effectively protect your instrument;

3. You must be careful to avoid putting too much weight on the legs. Although the piano has wheels, we do not recommend moving it on its wheels, since (given its great weight), this could damage the musical instrument itself and easily spoil the floor. Ideally, use a rolling platform with upholstered base that supports the weight. But due to its peculiar shape and structure (the weight is distributed unevenly), it is difficult to identify its centre of gravity to achieve stability throughout the entire transfer.
A handle can also be seen on the back wall of the piano. It is strongly discouraged to use it to transport the piano, because it simply will not support the load in the long term. Instead, use special straps to take the piano from the room to the truck;

4. If you live on a ground floor, then there will be no problems with the descent of this bulky instrument. However, if you are moving from the top floor and your house does not have a load lift or is not valid because it is small, make sure that the piano is not placed in an angled position. Also, if you move the piano down the stairs, it can damage the bottom of the instrument;

5. As we reported, it should only be transported horizontally. Once inside the vehicle of adequate size for your move, tensioners and belts will be placed to ensure that the musical instrument remains completely still while the truck is running;

6. Inside the piano there are very fragile pieces which could break or be damaged due to sudden changes in temperature or humidity. Therefore, although this is not an indispensable requirement, it is better not to transport the piano in the cold season, since it does not like temperature changes. If you must transport the piano in winter, try to find a truck that is equipped with air conditioning system. Then, when you arrive at your destination, try to slowly heat the instrument;

7. Due to the fact that a piano is sensitive to humidity and temperature, in your new home, try to place where there are no drafts, where the sun does not shine directly, and where the temperature and humidity are maintained more or less stable;

8. No matter how carefully the transportation is carried out, the piano after the transfer is tuned and in a new location its sound will always be affected. Perhaps a week later, you will need to contact a piano tuner, who will return it to its old state.
